The 1998 Austrian Grand Prix was held at the A1-Ring. It was the 10th round of the Formula 1 World Championship. A wet-dry qualifying session resulted in a mixed-up grid order, with Giancarlo Fisichella (picture here-under) taking the first pole position of his career in his Benetton-Playlife with Jean Alesi alongside him in a Sauber.

At the start, Mika Häkkinen (McLaren-Mercedes) got a brilliant getaway to lead into the first corner and cruised to an easy victory, with his team-mate Coulthard a superb second after being last at the start due to a collision on the second corner.

Michael Schumacher took third in his Ferrari aided by his team-mate Eddie Irvine who slowed down claiming marginal brakes, but many people in the paddock suspected he was asked to move over for his leader.
