In Paris for a few days, Simon Pagenaud found time to have lunch with me in a very nice restaurant, not far from the Place de la Concorde. The winner of the 2019 Indianapolis 500, runs from one interview to another, seems to be in great shape, and is happy to answer a few of our questions :

ZK : Simon, how do you feel and in what frame of mind are you before the start of the season ?

SP : Am feeling great ! I feel very sharp, because I continue to train all winter very hard, in the gym and outdoors as well. As a result, I feel even better prepared than the passed years, and I can’t wait for the new season to begin.

ZK : Will you again have a double program this year, with the IndyCar Series + the 3 major IMSA events ?

SP : Yes indeed, will start the season with the 24 Hours of Daytona and the Team Penske Acura, that I will drive with Dane Cameron and my great buddy Juan Pablo Montoya. We are a good and homogeneous team and it would be great to win this famous classic race.

ZK : You’ve won (in great fashion) the 2019 Indianapolis 500, what are your ambitions this year ?

SP : First I want to say how happy I am to be driving for someone like Roger Penske, a fantastic person, and a true legend. The fact that he puts his trust on me, is an immense honor. My ambition ? I want to win the Indy 500 this year again, I want to fight for the championship and win it, the mission is clear in my mind.

ZK : You are 35 years old, how long do you see yourself competing at the highest level ?

SP : I am convinced I’ll be racing at my highest level for another 7 or 8 years, at least. I love racing, I breath racing and if all goes well, I’ll be racing for wins and championships for a long time!
