You needed to be very brave indeed those days, like Carlos Pace was, (partnered by Arturo Merzario), and seen here at the wheel of this Ferrari 312PB at the 1973 Spa 1000 km.

The Burnenville corner, first long corner to the right, going into the Masta downhill, was more than 800 meters long, with a triple apex: the bravest were taking it absolutely flat!

During this 1973 edition, before a chicane was designed at Malmedy, the speeds on the old Francorchamps were the highest ever: 263,415 km/h average speed for Jacky Ickx (Ferrari) during practice and 262,461 km/h (official record, with much more fuel on board) for Henri Pescarolo (Matra) in the race.

The race was won by the elegant Mirage M6 of Bell-Hailwood in front of the sister car of Ganley-Schuppan (picture-below), then Pescarolo-Larrousse (Matra, in third) and Merzario-Pace in fourth position, driving the only surviving Ferrari 312PB.
