In December 1961, South Africa was for the first time visited by the Formula 1, with a “Springbok” Winter Series, with 4 Grand Prix, that did not count for the world championship.

We are here at the start of the Natal GP at Westmead and as star competitors, the Lotus of Jim Clark (in pole position, on the right) and Trevor Taylor sandwiching the Porsche of Jo Bonnier on the first row, and his team mate Edgar Barth, on the second row.

Clark will dominate the series with victories at Kyalami, Natal and East London, leaving only one victory to Taylor, at the Cape Grand Prix, run at Killarney on the 2nd of Jan 1962.
